Families in base housing default to Meadow Lane Elementary School (PK-4) and Greenwood Middle School (5-8). Both are standard Wayne County Public Schools campuses off the installation, not DoD-run.
High School: It Depends Where You Live
The default high school zoning for Seymour Johnson base housing is Eastern Wayne High School (grades 9-12).
But there's a second option worth knowing about before you assume that's your only path: the Wayne School of Technical Arts (WSTA) is a public school physically located on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base — the only public school on a military installation anywhere in North Carolina. It serves grades 6-12, roughly half its students are military-connected, and every class is taught at honors or Advanced Placement level. It's open to Wayne County students broadly, not just base residents, so it's an application/enrollment process through the district rather than an automatic assignment — confirm current enrollment steps with Wayne County Public Schools or the base School Liaison before counting on a seat.
⚠ The Default Zoning Isn't Your Only Option
Most incoming families assume base housing means an automatic, fixed school assignment — and for elementary and middle school, that's mostly true here. But at the secondary level, Eastern Wayne High School rates just 3/10 on GreatSchools, while Wayne School of Technical Arts rates 8/10 and sits on the installation itself.
That's a real gap, and it's easy to miss because WSTA isn't a DoD school and doesn't show up as an "on-base school" the way DoDEA campuses do at other installations. If your kid is entering 6th grade or older, it's worth contacting Wayne County Public Schools or the Seymour Johnson School Liaison Officer directly to ask about WSTA enrollment before defaulting to the standard zoning.
