Schools Near Joint Base Lewis-McChord

JBLM's on-post schools run through a regular public district, not DoDEA — and only a fraction of families ever actually get to use them. Here's what's verified, and where the honest answer is "check your specific address," not a clean rule.

On-Post Schools

JBLM has no DoDEA schools. On-post elementary schools are run directly by Clover Park School District, a Washington public school district. Clover Park states it operates six elementary schools on JBLM — we confirmed that by checking the actual street address of every Clover Park elementary school, and six of them are addressed on the installation itself: Carter Lake (McChord Field), Evergreen, Rainier, and Hillside (all Lewis Main), and Beachwood and Meriwether (both Lewis North).

Worth knowing before you count on any of this: only about 20% of JBLM families get on-base housing at all. Most incoming families will be dealing with an off-post district by default — Steilacoom, Bethel, North Thurston, Puyallup, Olympia, or Yelm, depending on the specific address — not the on-post system described here.

High School: It Depends Where You Live

There is no middle or high school physically located on JBLM. Clover Park's own military-families page is direct about this: "Middle school and high school students living on base may attend their neighborhood school." That means assignment is address-based, the same as it would be for any off-post family.

For high school, the split by housing area is confirmed: McChord Field → Clover Park High School. Lewis Main and Lewis North → Lakes High School.

For middle school, we could not verify a specific on-post-linked assignment. One secondary source named "Woodbrook Middle School" as the default for on-base kids, but that school doesn't appear anywhere on Clover Park's own official school list — so we're not repeating that claim. If middle school zoning matters to your move, check your specific housing contract address against the district's own boundary lookup rather than trusting a generic answer here.

⚠ Don't Assume You'll Get On-Post Schools — Or a Choice in Which One

Two things about JBLM are easy to miss until you're already mid-move. First, on-base housing — and with it, on-post schools — is only realistic for about 1 in 5 JBLM families. Most people PCSing here should plan around an off-post district from the start, not assume on-post schools are the default.

Second, if you do get on-base housing, you don't get to choose which high school your kid attends — your housing assignment decides it for you, and the two options aren't equal: Lakes High School rates 6/10 on GreatSchools, while Clover Park High School rates 4/10. Unlike Fort Liberty's new election option, there's no way to opt into the higher-rated school here if your housing lands you on McChord Field. If school quality matters to your family and you have any flexibility in your housing request, that's worth factoring in before you're assigned.
