Schools Near Fort Moore
Fort Moore runs DoDEA through 8th grade, same as Fort Liberty — but high school scatters across four counties in two different states, and there's a real, legal option to opt out of DoDEA entirely that most families never hear about until it's almost too late to use it.
On-Post Schools
DoDEA runs schools on post from Pre-K through 8th grade. Only residents of Fort Moore are eligible, and sponsors have to verify active-duty status and on-post residency before a child can be registered.
On-post DoDEA schools: Dexter, McBride, Stowers, and Wilson elementary schools, plus Faith Middle School. Note that GreatSchools doesn't rate any of these — DoDEA schools fall outside the state testing system GreatSchools' ratings are built on, so they show up as "unrated" rather than scored.
High School: It Depends Where You Live
Fort Moore's high schoolers are split across four counties in two states — confirmed directly on the official Army Fort Moore garrison page. Depending on where you live, you could land in Muscogee County Schools (Georgia), Chattahoochee County Schools (Georgia), Russell County Schools (Alabama), or Lee County Schools (Alabama).
The default assignment for most on-post families is Spencer High School in Muscogee County. Chattahoochee County High School is a second Georgia option. On the Alabama side, Fort Moore-connected families show up at Central High School in Phenix City — over 10% of its student body is military-connected — though this is an option that exists in the area, not something confirmed as a specific on-post housing assignment. ⚠ You Have a Legal Right to Opt Out of DoDEA — Here's the Catch
Most families assume DoDEA is the only option through 8th grade. It isn't. Under Georgia House Bill 224 (now Georgia Code § 20-2-295), Fort Moore families zoned into DoDEA have a legal right to instead enroll their kid in any Muscogee County public school, space permitting — called a Fort Benning Transfer (FBT).
The catch is the same one that shows up everywhere in this kind of policy: you provide the transportation, not the district. FBT decisions are also case-by-case with no appeal if denied for lack of space, and applications have to go through Muscogee County's Central Registration Office directly, not through DoDEA.
There's a second catch worth knowing before you get your hopes up: four of the district's strongest or most specialized schools are excluded from FBT eligibility entirely — Britt David Magnet Academy, Clubview Elementary, Columbus High School, and Rainey-McCullers School of the Arts. So this option opens up most of Muscogee County to you, but not the schools a lot of families would specifically want it for.
