Schools Near Fort Liberty
Fort Liberty families end up dealing with two separate school systems depending on where they live and how old their kids are — DoDEA on post through 8th grade, then one of two different county districts for high school. Here's exactly how that breaks down.
On-Post Schools
DoDEA runs schools on post from Pre-K through 8th grade only, on both the main Fort Liberty cantonment and in the Linden Oaks housing area. Only families actually living on military federal property are eligible to enroll — there are no exceptions for off-post families, even those living nearby.
On-post DoDEA schools include Bowley Elementary, Devers Elementary, Gordon Elementary (Cameron, NC), Hampton Primary, Shughart Elementary, Albritton Middle, Shughart Middle, and Irwin Intermediate.
If you're PCSing in and will be temporarily off-post for up to 90 school days before your on-post housing is ready, base housing can issue a 90-day letter letting your kids enroll on post in the meantime — you'd handle your own transportation during that window.
High School: It Depends Where You Live
There's no DoDEA high school at Fort Liberty. Every high schooler here attends a public school off post, and which one depends on which housing area you're in — this isn't a single answer for the whole installation.
Families on the main post are zoned to E.E. Smith High School, part of Cumberland County Schools.
Families in Linden Oaks are zoned to a completely different county — Overhills High School, part of Harnett County Schools.
If you're buying or renting off post entirely, note that school districts generally don't allow out-of-district enrollment — where you live determines where your kids go, so it's worth checking zoning before you commit to a specific neighborhood.
⚠ Before You Pick a School — Read This
Starting the 2026–2027 school year, Fort Liberty families on the main post are no longer stuck with E.E. Smith by default. Cumberland County now lets on-post students elect any of its 10 comprehensive high schools — including Pine Forest, which carries a meaningfully higher GreatSchools rating than E.E. Smith.
But here's the part that actually changes your day-to-day: bus transportation is only provided if you stay at E.E. Smith. Choose any of the other 9 schools and you're on your own for getting your kid there and back, every day, for the rest of high school. The election also has to be renewed every single year to reconfirm you still live on post.
This is a real tradeoff, not a free upgrade — run it against your actual commute and schedule before you submit the election form.
