Schools Near Fort Cavazos

Fort Cavazos works differently than a lot of installations — there's no DoDEA here at all. The schools on post are run by a regular public school district, and the path from a great on-post elementary experience to high school has a gap most families don't see coming.

On-Post Schools

Fort Cavazos has no DoDEA schools. The six elementary campuses on post — Meadows, Clarke, Oveta Culp Hobby, Clear Creek, Montague Village, and Venable Village — are all operated directly by Killeen ISD, a regular Texas public school district, not the Department of Defense. Same for the one on-post middle school, Audie Murphy (grades 6–8).

One real, current change to know about: Killeen ISD's board voted in October 2025 to eliminate Pre-K3 at all six on-post elementary campuses, effective at the end of the 2025–2026 school year, as part of a broader $100 million, five-year cost-cutting plan tied to the district losing federal Impact Aid funding. Pre-K4 is staying in place districtwide. If you've got a 3-year-old and were counting on an on-post Pre-K3 seat, that seat won't exist starting the 2026–2027 school year.

High School: It Depends Where You Live

There's no on-post high school in the normal sense. Once your kid ages into 9th grade, the default assignment depends on exactly where on post you live: families on the main post east of Clear Creek Road are zoned to Killeen High School, while families in Comanche Villages and West Fort Hood are zoned to Shoemaker High School. (This zoning was last confirmed changed in a 2021 district rezoning — worth double-checking with Killeen ISD directly if it's been a while, since we couldn't confirm no further changes since.)

Some off-post addresses west of the installation fall into Copperas Cove ISD or Belton ISD instead — a different district than either on-post zoning, so it matters which side of post you buy or rent on.

⚠ The Gap Between the On-Post Elementary and the Default High School

Fort Cavazos has a genuinely excellent on-post elementary option and a genuinely excellent on-post high school option — they're just not the same as the school your kid gets defaulted into. Clarke Elementary rates 9/10 on GreatSchools. The on-post Early College High School — a partnership with Central Texas College where students can earn a high school diploma and an associate degree together — also rates 9/10.

But Early College High School is not an automatic assignment. It's a competitive application program open to all Killeen ISD 8th and 9th graders districtwide, not just Fort Cavazos residents, with a counselor-submitted application and a selection screening. It also requires a base entry pass since the freshman/sophomore campus sits on the installation itself.

If your family doesn't apply — or doesn't get in — your kid defaults to Killeen High School (2/10) or Shoemaker High School (3/10), depending on which side of post you live on. That's a steep drop from the elementary experience, and it's not something anyone tells you about at check-in. If Early College High School is something you want, get the application process started early — don't assume it's the default path.
