Aberdeen Proving Ground PCS Relocation Guide
Overview
Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) sits right on the Chesapeake Bay in Harford County, Maryland, about 30 miles northeast of Baltimore. Established in 1917, it's one of the Army's oldest and most storied installations — and it's still very much a working, mission-critical post. If you're inbound here, you're landing in a place with deep military roots, a genuine sense of community, and surprisingly easy access to both big-city amenities and quiet waterfront living. Maryland is not the cheapest state on the map, but Harford County gives you a lot more value than the Baltimore suburbs closer to the city — and your BAH reflects the market.
BAH & What It Covers Here
Here's the 2026 BAH picture for some common ranks at APG (Harford County rate):
| Rank | With Dependents | Without Dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-5 | $2,478/mo | $1,986/mo |
| E-6 | $2,742/mo | $2,076/mo |
| E-7 | $2,862/mo | $2,274/mo |
| O-3 | $3,072/mo | $2,643/mo |
| O-4 | $3,396/mo | $2,865/mo |
That BAH is real money in Harford County — especially if you're willing to look a little outside Aberdeen proper. Junior enlisted families with dependents should be able to find solid rental options that don't eat every dollar of that allowance. Senior NCOs and officers have enough room to start a serious conversation about buying rather than renting. If you want to know specifically what your BAH buys you right now in a given neighborhood, reach out and I'll connect you with someone who tracks that market daily.
Where Families Live & Commute Times
You've got good options within a reasonable drive of the gate, and none of them require a brutal commute:
- Aberdeen — 17 min / 6.8 mi. Closest to post. Practical choice if you want a short commute and a tight military community feel.
- Perryman — 17 min / 7.3 mi. Nearly the same drive time as Aberdeen, worth a look.
- Belcamp — 21 min / 9.5 mi. A bit more suburban, slightly more removed from the gate.
- Wildwood — 22 min / 11 mi. Similar commute to Belcamp with a different neighborhood character.
- Abingdon — 22 min / 11.2 mi. Popular with families, solid mix of housing types.
- Havre de Grace — 25 min / 11.7 mi. A genuine gem. It's a small waterfront city on the Susquehanna River where it meets the Bay — charming, walkable downtown, and still under 30 minutes to the gate. A lot of military families fall in love with it.
All of these sit in Harford County, so you're staying in the same school system and tax environment regardless of which town you land in.
Schools
Harford County Public Schools serves the area around APG. Before you commit to a neighborhood, do your homework on the specific schools that feed from that address. The best place to start is GreatSchools.org's Aberdeen listings — browse by town, check the schools that matter to your kids' grade levels, and go from there.
Things to Do & Area Life
Living near APG puts you in a genuinely great spot for getting out and exploring. Baltimore is less than an hour away, and that city punches way above its weight for a mid-sized metro.
History and culture: Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine is right in Baltimore Harbor — the place that inspired the Star-Spangled Banner. It's a meaningful visit, especially if you've spent a career in uniform. The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore is world-class and free to the public. And if you want something completely different, the Herr's Snack Factory Tour and Gift Shop in the area is a fun, low-key outing the kids will actually remember.
Sports: Baltimore takes its sports seriously. Camden Yards and Oriole Park at Camden Yards give you MLB baseball in one of the best ballparks in the country. M&T Bank Stadium is home to the Ravens. Under Armour Stadium rounds out the options for live athletics. If you're a fan of any of it, you'll be well fed here.
Outdoors and fitness: Lums Pond State Park offers hiking, camping, and water access — a solid weekend destination. The Pinnacle Overlook gives you a good payoff view for a reasonable effort. Movement Hampden in Baltimore is a well-regarded climbing gym if that's your scene.
The overall vibe is Mid-Atlantic working waterfront with real city access. It's not the Pacific Northwest, and it's not the Deep South — it's its own thing, and most families who come here end up liking it more than they expected.
Using Your VA Loan Here
The VA loan limit for Harford County is $832,750. That's substantial buying power, and with no down payment required on loans at or under that limit, your VA benefit is genuinely valuable in this market. Whether you're buying your first home or your fifth, using your VA loan here makes financial sense — but the details matter. Timing, rates, seller concessions, and neighborhood-level pricing all affect what you'll actually pay. I don't deal in generic advice on that. Reach out and I'll connect you with a local agent who knows this market and knows how to work a VA transaction the right way.
